اZakat is a basic obligation and a financial act of worship that is required for all types of lawful earnings and money, such as paper money, gold and silver, commercial, industrial, agricultural, animal and farm wealth, stocks and bonds, according to specific conditions and amounts. In order for Zakat to achieve its goal within its principles and pillars, it must have a specialized Zakat institution. Therefore, the Zakat Fund was established in Lebanon in 1404 AH - 1984 AD. It is one of the institutions of Dar Al-Fatwa, which is active in the charitable, social, developmental and relief fields, with the aim of collecting the Zakat of Muslims and delivering it according to the legal conditions to those who are entitled to it, whom God Almighty has defined in His saying: {Zakat is only for the poor and the needy and those employed to collect it and those whose hearts are to be reconciled and to free captives and those in debt and for the cause of Allah and the wayfarer - an obligation from Allah. And Allah is Knowing and Wise.} Verse 60 of Surat At-Tawbah.
The Zakat Fund works to revive this divine duty, alleviate the suffering of the poor and needy, achieve a cohesive and productive society, and pay special attention to orphans within their families and work to develop rural communities.
It has many vital programs such as: permanent financial assistance for the elderly, widows and the sick, emergency assistance, medical and hospital assistance, in-kind assistance, food basket, fasting breakfast, sacrificial meat, Eid clothing, dairy cow, productive good loan, productive grants, support for school books and student bags, support for Quranic summer courses, support for students of Islamic law, support for institutions and regions, assistance to prisoners, and sponsorship of orphans. It also provides medical services through its health center in Beirut to its beneficiaries and needy families.
The Zakat Fund has a committee that includes an elite group of community activists from scholars, businessmen, doctors, lawyers, engineers and accountants, headed by the Director General, and its work is for the sake of Allah Almighty. It is supported by a general advisory body composed of all former members, and a committee composed of elite women of society (the Women’s Circle). He participated in and organized many conferences, seminars and workshops concerned with Zakat, its developments and contemporary applications, and signed a memorandum of understanding with the Islamic Research and Training Institute affiliated with the Islamic Development Bank in Jeddah for joint cooperation in holding specialized scientific seminars and conferences.
